About Us

History

SMI(ACT) Inc was formed as a result of the leading Strata Management firms wishing to have a structure and forum which allowed its members to work towards the enhancement of the responsibilities of members in a professional manner.

The first body corporate, or Owners Corporation was registered in June 1971. In that time the Unit Titles Ordinance 1970 has been updated to become the Unit Titles Act 2001. Although the management firms have worked together in some areas relating to legislation, there has been in the past no formal body to provide a sound structure.

The SMI(ACT) Inc is affiliated with NCTI the National body representing Strata Management firms, unit owners, practitioners, tradespeople, insurers, bankers and other parties involved in the professional full time administration of strata schemes throughout the states and territories.

The SMI(ACT) Inc intends to work with unit owners and practitioners in the industry to provide training, ensure that minimum standards are maintained, provide protection to consumers and assist the resolution of disputes between members and their clients. It has recently finalised a standard agency agreement so that services and fees are defined clearly and will administer and develop a continuing professional development program for members.

The SMI(ACT) Inc represents 85% of strata management practitioners in the ACT.
